Klondike Kate’s is one of the oldest business locations on Newark’s Main Street.
For more than 242 years, its been providing entertainment in a variety of ways. The establishment was called
"Three Hearts Tavern" on a map from 1757. In 1797 it became "Hossinger’s
Tavern". A map was published in 1860, which cites B.F. Herman as the proprietor
of the "Newark Hotel". In 1880 the hotel became the "Exchange Building" and had
shops, office space an apartments. Around the turn of the century, it was used
as a furniture store. Everett C. Hohnson took this over to begin publication of
the "Newark Post". From 1905 to 1915 it was used as a courtroom and a jail. The
jail cells are in the basement and it still exists today. The location came to
be known as "Squire Lovett’s Courthouse and Jail". Some people recall when it
was used as Newark’s roller skating rink.
In the twenties, the building became
identified with the "Horseless Carriage". Joseph Brown opened a replacement
parts business in 1929 and sold the property in 1977.
And thanks to you,
the history continues!
